2026 Essay Prize Winner

The 2026 Lutheran Quarterly Essay Prize, sponsored by the 1521 Foundation, has been awarded to Johannes Schimohr for “Communion Contested; Luther and Karlstadt on I Corinthians 10,” Lutheran Quarterly 40 (2026): 1-26. Peer reviews from specialists in Luther and Andreas Karlstadt highlighted Schimohr’s close analysis of the exegetical dispute between these two reformers over the corporeal presence of Christ in the sacrament, years before Zwingli entered the fight. Schimohr is a recent graduate of the University of Tübingen, Department of Protestant Theology, now on a two-year vicarage in preparation for ordination in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Württemberg.

Again this year, all submissions received careful examination and detailed feedback, in hopes of assisting the next generation of scholars. Thanks to the continuing partnership of the 1521 Foundation, another prize of $5,000 will be awarded in 2027 for the best essay published in LQ by a student or recent graduate.
